Rheumatology & Arthritis

Home - Rheumatology & Arthritis

Rheumatism stands for inflammation and pain in the joints, ligaments and of course in the muscles of the body. Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the few examples of Rheumatic diseases. Many patients come to our clinic every year in many stages of the disease. Though the condition is not fully reversible, the patients who come in the very early stage of this disorder can get benefited with the treatment earlier.

Medication can control the Rheumatoid Arthritis and further pain to their joints while easing the pain and the discomfort caused by the disease. Many patients even come after they are suggested to go through knee replacement surgery by other rheumatologists in Hyderabad. We have been successful in helping many patients by managing their arthritis with medication while ignoring the operation.

Once you are done with any of the rheumatic diseases, it affects your joints, tendons, bones and ligaments. There can be some musculoskeletal diseases which can have common symptoms like Joint Pain, Loss of motion, Inflammation and swelling of any body part especially joints.

These types of health conditions are known as rheumatology. The most common diseases that come under this category are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Infectious arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Gout
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis etc.

There is no doubt that Rheumatoid Arthritis is a problem which appears with age. If any degeneration has already happened, it is difficult for this disease to get reversed. If we can say that Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition, then it won’t be wrong at all. An autoimmune condition means when healthy body tissues get attacked by the immune system. Generally, the antibodies help you to fight with infection when the immune system gets attacked by viruses and bacteria.

The patient with Rheumatoid arthritis receives antibodies in their joint lining, sent mistakenly by their immune system. This causes damage near the joint while leaving it sored and inflamed.

The chemicals which cause the damage can get severe if the condition is not treated correctly. The joints can even lose their shapes and strength with time.

Diagnosing RA in the early stages is not an easy task at all, because the early signs and symptoms are widespread and similar to other health conditions. To diagnose the disease in the patients, our expert rheumatoid arthritis specialist in Hyderabad may check the joints for swelling, redness and the muscles and reflexes strength. It is not at all possible to diagnose this disease with a blood test alone.

But why we take a blood test?

It is not that the blood test doesn’t show the symptoms of the disease at all. Most of the arthritis patients also go through ESR or elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Which means that there presents an inflammatory process in the body.

X-Rays: We may also go for X-ray imaging for many cases, or maybe in every situation. AN X-ray scan helps the doctors to identify the progression of the RA in the joints. Other tests like ultrasound or MRI also help the doctor to understand the severity of the condition.

We at Germanten follow both the approaches of treatment, including surgical and non-surgical. We want to be very truthful. Thus, we want to tell you one thing very rigidly, and that is rheumatoid arthritis don’t have any cure. But the symptoms of the disease can be kept under control.

Non-Surgical treatment options for Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Though the type of treatment will be suggested by our rheumatology doctors in Hyderabad, medication is the primary treatment process, they want to go for every patient and try to fix the problem without any surgical intervention. The possible medication options to treat RA are:

  • NSAIDs: These are basically nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These medicines are given to relieve pain and so to reduce the inflammation from the joint. The strength of the medication given is decided according to the severity and the health condition of the patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Steroids: Steroids are also given for the same purpose. They reduce the pain and the swelling of the joint and even slow down the damage of the cartilage. A corticosteroid can be prescribed to the patients who are suffering from an acute condition of the same disease. The goal always remains to taper the medicine slowly.
  • DMARDs: Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs can slow down the effect of arthritis in the joints of the patient body. It can even save other tissues and joints from getting damaged by the disease. This type of medicine scan helps the joints from getting damaged permanently if taken at the right time.
  • Therapy: Physical therapy can help you to deal with the disease to some extent. Our certified and trained therapist will teach you specific exercises that can help you to keep your joints healthy and flexible. You will be given with a daily routine of the practices which can even include new exercise plan daily or maybe the same.

You might even suggest using assistive devices to aid the therapy.

Surgical treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis:

There are many patients for whom the medication or the non-surgical treatments did not work effectively. They are such cases where the drugs could not prevent the slow damage of the joint and the cartilage. Surgery can help the patients in restoring their ability and can revamp the quality of their lives. Surgical processes can reduce pain and improve body functioning.

  • Joint Fusion: This is a surgical procedure, and in this process, the joint may be recommended to stabilize by realigning it to ease the pain and the symptoms.
  • Total Joint Replacement: During the joint replacement surgery the doctor goes for removing the damaged part of the joint and is replaced with artificial capping to refrain the bone edges from getting rubbed to each other causing pain and discomfort.
