Types of knee surgery for Arthiritis

Types of Knee Surgery for Arthritis Treatment

Types Of Knee Surgery

In the medical field, various types of knee surgery are available to treat knee arthritis. Suppose you are experiencing this health condition, then you might be recommended by a doctor or surgeon for some surgery. Your age, anatomy, lifestyle, health, and personal preference determine which knee surgery types suit you.

Total Arthritis Knee Replacement Surgery (Total Knee Arthroplasty)

Replacing the entire knee can be an option for patients with moderate to severe knee arthritis and for whom non-surgical treatment does not work. In these knee surgery types, the ends of the tibia (shin bone) and femur (thigh bone) are cut and then capped with prostheses.

The two prosthetic pieces are made of metal or, in some cases, polyethene. The two pieces move smoothly against one another, thus making the knee functional again. The knee will recover partially in 4 to 6 weeks; for a full recovery, it might take around an entire month.

This arthritis knee surgery helps patients to get relief from knee pain and, at the same time, improve knee functionality. It is vital to take care of a replacement knee as it may not be as strong as a healthy knee. Arthritis knee replacement is recommended for patients who have recently undergone total replacement surgery to avoid high-impact activities such as jogging.

Partial Arthritis Knee Replacement Surgery (Uni-compartmental Knee Arthroplasty)

Partial replacement surgery is often referred to as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. In this procedure, only one of the knee’s three compartments is replaced.

The three compartments of the knee are:

  • The medial compartment refers to the inner knee. It is the part where a person’s knees touch when their legs are together.
  • The lateral compartment is the outer knee.
  • The patellofemoral compartment is found at the front of the knee, where the patella meets the femur.

In this surgery, the focus is to treat the arthritically damaged compartment of the knee joint and, at the same time, preserve healthy areas. Therefore, the surgery is suitable for a smaller section of patients. However, if your knee is not aligned correctly or you have severe arthritis, stiffness, ligament damage, or inflammatory arthritis, you may not be eligible for these knee surgery types

Knee Osteotomy (Tibial Osteotomy or Femoral Osteotomy)

For those physically active people below 60 years whose poor knee alignment has led to wear and tear on just one side of the knee, knee osteotomy will be best. The condition is also referred to as unilateral knee arthritis or asymmetrical knee arthritis.

During this arthritis knee surgery, the surgeon marks a cut into the femur, tibia, or both. Then a small wedge of bone is removed, and in that place, a small wedge of natural graft or artificial bone material is inserted.

The knee osteotomy re-aligns the joint to push the pressure to the good side of the knee. It helps reduce wear and tear on the wrong side. The surgery aims to reduce the pain and slow down the progression. If the knee osteotomy is successful, then you delay the need for total knee replacement for about ten years.

After the surgery, the patient can participate in high-impact sports. However, it is major surgery with potential risk factors and complications. For anisotropic arthritis knee surgery, full recovery can take around a complete one or even a year.

Knee Arthroscopy

For Arthroscopic surgery, only a small incision is needed. Your surgeon will insert a small video camera and surgical tools. During the procedure, they can also assess joint degeneration.

Knee debridement and lavage can also be performed. It includes the following process:

  • The loose pieces of cartilage or bone that irritate are removed.
  • Trim and smooth out the irregular or bumpy cartilage
  • Remove inflamed synovial tissue.
  • Lavage the joint that is to flush it with saline solution to clean out material that leads to irritation or swelling

Opinions differ on whether these types of ACL surgery or normal knee surgery are best suited or not. Moreover, if you are looking for different types of ACL surgery, come to Germanten Hospital. With the latest facilities and advanced technologies, our experts can help you with some of the best knee surgery types with little to no risks and complications.

step by step guide on knee replacement surgery

Step-by-Step Explanation of Knee Replacement Surgery

Total knee replacement surgery is an intricate process which requires high expertise and skill from the surgeon to make exact measurements and precisely remove the affected bone, and shape the remaining portion in a manner to fit the knee implant. Finally, the surgeon would construct an artificial knee joint. Knee replacement surgery has a success rate of around 90%, which shows why it is in demand.

Knee joint replacement surgery is shorter when compared to some of the other joint replacement surgeries. However, even though the knee replacement surgery time is only around 1 to 3 hours, the doctor may ask you to stay back at the clinic for recovery for 2 to 3 days. But it will depend on your condition. Therefore, before deciding to undergo surgery, it is necessary to have a proper knee replacement explanation and other relevant details.

Here is an overview of how the knee joint replacement surgery takes place:

An incision in the knee

Knee joint replacement surgery begins with an incision in the front of the knee to reach the patella, commonly known as the kneecap. In the traditional method, the incision used to be 8-10 inches long. But with a minimally invasive procedure, the incision will only be 4-6 inches long. Either way, knee replacement surgery success rate depends on several factors, including the patient’s condition.

Rotation of kneecap

The kneecap, also known as the patella, is rotated by the surgeon outside the knee region. It helps them directly look into the area which has to be fixed.

Preparing the thigh bone

After the incision, the surgeon would resurface the femur, also known as the thigh bone. All the measurements are taken precisely, and cuts are made with the help of special instruments. The affected portion of bone and cartilage from the femur is removed by cutting it out. The end of the femur bone is shaped to attach perfectly to the femoral component of the artificial knee.

Insertion of the femoral component

The surgeon would implant the metallic femoral component in the femur bone. Then, it is sealed with the help of bone cement.

Preparation of the tibia bone

The subsequent bone, the surgeon, would resurface is the tibia, also known as the shinbone. The surgeon would precisely surface and reshape the top of the tibia bone to get under the metal and plastic tibial portion of the artificial knee.

Insertion of the tibial component

The lower portion of the implant, known as the tibial tray, is precisely inserted in the tibia bone and sealed fast with the help of bone cement. Once the tibial tray is placed in position, the surgeon would place it in a polyethene insert (of medical-grade plastic) which is in between the tibial tray and the femoral component. It acts as a buffer. The polyethene insert is essential to provide flexibility to the knee joint as you bend and sit down.

Adjustment of the knee cap

Before putting back the patella in its place, the surgeon would have to flatten it. A plastic component is then attached to the patella such that they fit in perfectly with the artificial knee. The plastic component might also be cemented if required.

Completion of the surgery

After the knee replacement surgery, the orthopaedic surgeon will check the flexibility, alignment, position and size of your knee to see if the implant is working correctly. Then, the surgery is ended by stitching up the incisions and bandaging the area. After the doctor has checked the flexibility and alignment, they shift the patient to the other room for recovery, with the leg in a continuous passive movement (CPM) machine. The purpose of using this machine is to gently keep the knee in a bent position and flex the artificial knee joint while the patient is lying down.

The knee replacement surgery time is usually 1 to 3 hours but varies according to the patient’s condition.

How do I know if my knee injury is serious

How do I know if my knee injury is serious?

Imagine you are on a run and fall over a sidewalk, or you awkwardly bend your knees; what would you do next? The sudden falls and accidents may break the knee bones or tear the cartilage. The knees are the most commonly injured joints of the body, it is vital to check their health. But how do you know if your knee injury is serious?

Every year thousands of people experience knee pain. It may result from sports injuries or other conditions. If you have a knee injury, you must seek medical help preferably from a knee specialist. Understanding the signs and symptoms to judge if the damage is severe, would help.

If the knee injury is caused by trauma or sudden blow to the knee structure, it may be a severe knee injury. The injury can damage the ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bursa sac. These tissues are present around the knee structure and help in its movement. The complexity of the knee structure makes it vulnerable to damages. Moreover, if you are involved in a contact or collision sport, you would know about such injuries.

How do I know if my knee injury is serious?

If you have any of these common knee injuries, it needs medical attention.

  • A damaged ACL requires immediate medical attention, and the damages may occur due to sudden changes in direction, jumps, abrupt stops, and high-speed activities.
  • A torn meniscus, occurring due to sudden twist in the leg.
  • Knee bursitis, occurring due to an inflammation in the bursa sac. It often results from constant kneeling.
  • Knee fractures due to a sudden fall or accident.
  • Patellar tendinitis occurs due to high-impact running and jumping. It is a condition that causes inflammation in the tendons connecting the thigh to the shin.

After a knee injury, it is beneficial to visit a doctor’s office. But how to know if my knee injury is serious and I need medical attention?

The reasons that make up for mandatory visit to a doctor’s clinic are:

  • Swelling
If you have hurt your knees, you may develop swelling around them. However, it is common to experience a bit of swelling due to fluid accumulation. If you develop excess swelling within a few hours of the injury, it requires medical attention. It could be due to a fracture or a torn ACL. Therefore, you must visit a doctor for a proper check-up.
  • Popping sound
You can contact a doctor if you hear a popping or crunching sound while moving your legs. It could happen after bending your legs at an unnatural angle. The popping or crunching sound may be followed by intense pain.
  • Inability to bear heavyweight
If you cannot put pressure on the injured leg, you must visit a clinic for medical help. Whenever you try to put your weight on the injured leg, you feel intense pain. The pain may result from a fractured bone.
  • A locked knee
If you are a young athlete, you may develop a torn meniscus. The injury may hinder your movements because the inner torn fragments are flipped into the centre. The damage may be fixed through surgical intervention. A surgeon fixes the meniscus at its exact location during the surgery.
  • Inability to fully extend the knee
You may face issues while flexing or extending your knees. It may happen due to inflammation, swelling, aches, and pain. However, these problems may indicate serious issues like a torn ACL, patellar dislocations, and other knee problems.
  • Knees giving out or buckling under pressure
If you feel that your knees are under pressure, it may be because of a torn ACL. For example, a sudden twist during sports or putting excess pressure on the knees during a jump can cause knee injuries.

All these conditions require medical attention. So you must visit a knee specialist for a proper diagnosis of your knees. • Improved quality of life

The first question patients often ask is who needs a replacement is how long do these implants last? So depending on your style of work, these implants usually last from 15-20 years for all ages. They are manufactured with plastic or metal that resembles the joint. So the choice of implant will affect the total knee replacement cost in Hyderabad.

The Types Of Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement is medically known as knee arthroplasty, and the surgery involves removing and replacing damaged knee joints with artificially made prosthetics that work like a normal knee joint. Based on the extent of damage to your joint, there are different joint replacement surgeries available as follows-

  • Total Knee Replacement (TKR)
The total knee replacement is also known as primary knee replacement and is performed by an orthopaedic surgeon. It is recommended when your joint is fully damaged. The surgeon will completely replace your damaged knee joint with prosthetics. It eliminates the pain and restores the normal working of the knee for a better remaining life.
  • Partial Knee Replacement (PKR)
When your knee joint is partially damaged, a partial knee replacement or unicompartmental knee replacement surgery is suggested. The surgeon will replace only the damaged parts of the knee with artificial prosthetics. Thus, while preserving natural bones, it will replace the damaged parts.
  • Revision Knee Replacement
These are redo surgeries and are often performed when the previous replacement surgery has failed or the implants are damaged over time.

The other knee replacement surgeries are complex knee replacement, knee cap replacement, high flex knee replacement and minimally invasive knee replacement surgeries performed by Dr. Mir Jawad Zar Khan.

When will I Need a Knee Replacement Surgery?

Several conditions can affect the knee. When they become severe enough to damage the joint and cause pain, you might need replacement surgery.

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, severe arthritis to the knee, knee pain and swelling, wear and tear of the knee joint due to overuse, deformities, degeneration of bones with age are some of the probable reasons.

Different Types of knee replacement surgeries

Different Types Of Knee Replacement Surgeries

Knee pain is a common problem in older adults. It hampers the ability to walk, stand, and do routine chores. Knee problems can be caused by arthritis, ageing, normal wear and tear, and traumatic injury. There are different types of knee surgery that one can undergo to improve their condition.

Our knee is made up of ligaments, tendons, bones, and cartilage. You can experience pain, stiffness, swelling, and bruising in the case of an injured knee. Knee surgery, which is performed to heal the damaged part, has gained popularity in recent times. Let’s read about the different kinds of knee surgery that one can undergo.

Types Of Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is a surgical treatment to remove the knee’s damaged part and replace it with artificial components. It is also termed knee arthroplasty. With the advancement in medical science, knee replacement surgery can now be performed in a minimally invasive manner. The major types of knee surgery procedures are:

  • Partial Knee Replacement
It is helpful in case of partial damage to the knees. It is an outpatient procedure performed under anaesthesia. The damaged bone or cartilage is removed from the knee. You may require a few weeks to recover completely. Small incisions are made while performing the surgery. The tissues heal quickly, and the blood loss is low compared to total knee replacement surgery. You will require a walker or cane to provide support while walking on your new knees.
  • Total Knee Replacement
It is one of the types of knee replacement surgery that involves replacing and repairing damaged joints. The damaged part is replaced with an artificial part which is made of plastics and metals. The types of knee replacement joints that are removed and replaced with a prosthetic part include shin bone’s top, thigh bone’s bottom, kneecap, connective and supportive tissues. The recovery is slow, and you may require a walker for support. You will also need to stay in the hospital after the surgery. It is crucial to undergo physical therapy for the new knee. Avoiding the exercises can lead to blood clots, chronic knee pain, and nerve damage.
  • Robotic Partial Knee Replacement – One Of The New Knee Prosthesis Types
The robotic knee replacement prosthesis types make use of MAKOplasty to give an effective result. MAKOplasty is a robotic surgery that involves a CT scan. The CT scan allows the surgeon to build a virtual model of your knee. While performing the surgery, the surgeon uses a robotic arm for precise results. The process is tailored to the needs of the patient and ensures speedy recovery. It also reduces the risk of trauma by providing robotic assistance.
  • Osteotomy Knee Surgery
One of the knee operation types is osteotomy knee surgery. In this surgery, either the tibia or femur bone is reshaped to relieve pressure on the knee joint. It is helpful for people who have early-stage arthritis. Once you undergo the procedure, it improves your movement and knee’s functions. You can go home after two days of the process. Taking support of crutches helps in the initial days of the surgery.
  • Knee Revision Surgery
If you have undergone knee replacement surgery previously, even then, you may experience discomfort or pain in your knee. It happens because of the wear out of the previous prosthesis. Knee revision surgery is complex to perform as the surgeon needs to remove the existing implant. In addition, you may need a bone graft to support the new prosthesis and encourage bone growth. It is a common knee joint surgery type in the case of an existing prosthesis.

The different types of knee replacement implants have helped in treating knee pain. However, the knee is one of the bones that can get damaged easily. Your profession also decides the extent of your injury. For example, knee injuries are common in a sportsperson. The overuse of certain tendons and cartilage may cause damage to the knee and adjoining region.
