WHAT IS HIP REPLACEMENT?

Total Hip Replacement [THR] surgery is  a surgical method in which the painful hip joint of your body is surgically removed and is replaced with an artificial joint made of plastic and metal components.

THR surgery is performed when other pain-relieving medicines or procedures have failed to relieve the pain because of the hip joint arthritis.

After THR surgery the patient can walk comfortably as the pain in his/her hip joint is relieved.

After total knee replacement [TKR] surgery, this is the second most common joint replacement surgery. Patients who are suffering from hip arthritis or a painful hip joint due to an accident are ideally suited for this surgery.

HOW WE DO THAT AT GERMANTEN HOSPITAL

Our team of surgeons and doctors have performed more than 10,000 hip replacement surgeries with German precision.

This minimally invasive  hip replacement surgery involves making a lower incision in the patient’s body to treat the problem as against the traditional surgical cut for THR.

In  this minimally invasive surgery [MIS] method,   our surgeons make one or two  incisions of 2 to 5 inches. The incisions  are made along the side of the hip exposing the muscles which are connected to the top of the thighbone.  The ‘ball’ of the  hip joint, which is the head of the femur, is removed to be replaced by the ‘ball’ of the artificial joint. The ‘socket’ of the ‘ball’ is also fixed to the pelvic bones with bone cement.

Any damaged cartilage between the ball and the socket is removed to prepare the surface of the hip bone. The ball or the head of the femur [thigh bone] is inserted into the ‘socket’part of the hip joint.

The minimally invasive approach helps lessen blood loss and reduce ease pain, resulting in a short  hospital stay and faster healing. In this minimally invasive technique, the doctors need to be highly experienced.

Studies have shown that the outcome of the minimally invasive surgical method can be worse than a standard hip surgery if is not done with the utmost care and expertise.

At Germanten Hospital, we ensure that our patients are offered good quality total hip replacement [THR] surgery at competitive costs, which suit nearly every patient.

Our  team of surgeons advises about the best type of surgery applicable to your case and make sure that you receive  the best standard of treatment during and after the surgery.

CAUSES OF A PAINFUL HIP?

The most common cause a painful hip joint and disability is arthritis.  Different types of arthritis of the hip joint are the most common forms of the disease.

  • Osteoarthritis: People above the age of 50 with a family history of arthritis suffer from from this type of arthritis. In the hip bones, the cartilage cushions get  worn outand causes  severe pain. Because of less cushioning, the bones rub with each other and keep causing continuous pain.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: The synovial membrane gets thickened and inflamed when a patient suffers from this type of arthritis. The inflammation damages the cartilage cushioning and causes pain and stiffness.
  • Post-traumatic arthritis: If a patient suffers an injury or an accident, this type of arthritis can follow. The cartilage gets damaged because of the injury, just like other types of arthritis, and this causes pain.
  • Avascular necrosis: If for any accident or injury, the hip gets dislocated, the blood flow to the femoral head  is reduced. As a result the part in the middle of the head of the femur gradually dies. The condition is commonly known as osteonecrosis wherein the lack of blood flow collapses the bone surface resulting in arthritis. This type of arthritis can be caused by other diseases or drugs as well.
  • Childhood hip disease: Many children suffer from a hip problem in their childhood. Though the issue gets resolved during childhood itself, it may cause arthritis in later part of their lives. When the joint surfaces are affected and the hip doesn’t grow properly,  the patients suffer from this type of arthritis.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A HIP SURGERY AT GERMANTEN HOSPITAL?

Our hip replacement surgeons  ensure that the decision to do hip surgery is made cooperatively  with the patient and his/her family. The decision making process starts once  the hip replacement surgeon evaluates your case and suggests surgery. There  is no age limitation for the patient who want to opt for THR.

From teenagers to  elderly patients, our team of doctors has performed several  surgeries while successfully replacing the hip joint and helping the patients recover Germanten, we provide bar codes for hip replacement which helps the patient with their further medication, while saving time and money. Once you undergo a hip replacement, it lasts for 30 to 40 years. The affected and the painful part of your hip is replaced with an artificial hip joint, which functions like the hip itself.

At Germanten Hospital, we not only use  advanced technology and medication for hip replacement surgery, but we  ensure that our patients receive excellent  aftercare as well. Since  our treatments and operations  are minimally invasive, our patients are able to stand independently within 4 hours.

The artificial implant is made with quality materials to make sure that it  doesn’t wear away. Not every patient is treated with the same operating method. The doctors may try different ways for different patients to keep the success rate of the surgery high and prescribe the most suitable technique for each patient.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO AFTER THE SURGERY?

We at Germanten Hospital make sure that you heal in the shortest possible time. Although  the minimally invasive operating method helps the patients to receive treatment easily, they still need to follow some of the recommendations we provide:

  • Keep stair climbing or exercising minimum. The patients who have recently gone through a hip replacement surgery must not climb up and down the steps often.
  • They must avoid falls and other injuries soon after THR surgery has been performed.
  • They must use an elevated toilet seat, which keeps them away from bending the hip for a long period of time.
