HIP REPLACEMENT

What is Total Hip Replacement surgery?

Total Hip Replacement [THR] surgery is asurgical treatment in which the painful hip joint of your body is surgically removed and is replaced with an artificial joint made of plastic and metal alloy components.

THR surgery is performed whenother pain-relieving medicines or procedures have failed to relieve the pain in the hip joint.

After THR surgery the patient can walk comfortably without pain.

After total knee replacement [TKR] surgery, this is the second most common joint replacement surgery. This is also one of the most successful super major surgeries along with Total Knee Replacement and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.

Who needs THR?

Patients who are suffering from hip arthritis or a painful hip joint due to an accident are ideally suited for this surgery.

How We Do Thr At Germanten Hospital

Our team of surgeons and doctors have performed more than 10,000 hip replacement surgerieswith German precision.

Germanten surgeons perform THR both in the traditional manner as well as by a Minimally Invasive Surgery [MIS] technique.

Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery

Thisinvolves makinga smaller incision in the patient’s body to treat the problem as againstthe traditional surgical cut for THR.

Our surgeons make one or two  incisionsof 2 to 5 inches. The incisionsare made along the side of the hip exposing the muscles which are connected to the top of the femur [thighbone].The ‘ball’ of the femur, which is a part of the hip joint, is removedand replaced by with an artificial ‘ball’ of the prosthetic joint. The ‘socket’, a part of pelvic bones, is also replaced with prosthesis, and fixed with bone cement.
Any damaged cartilage between the ball and the socket is removed.

The minimally invasive approach in THR helps reduce blood loss during surgery and reducespain. This results in a shorter hospital stay and faster healing.

However, only highly experienced surgeons can perform the MIS technique for THR, because scientific research studies have shown that the outcome of minimally invasive surgical method for THR can be worse than a standard hip surgery if it is not done with the utmost care and expertise.

At Germanten Hospital, with our skilled team of surgeons, nurses and paramedical staff,we ensure that our patients are offeredgood quality total hip replacement [THR] surgery and that too at atcompetitivecosts.

Our surgeons will adviseabout the best type of surgery for each patient. We make sure that each and every patient receives the treatment with best standards of care during and after the surgery.

Causes Of A Painful Hip Joint

The most common cause a painful hip joint and disability is arthritis. There are different types of arthritis of the hip joint.

Osteoarthritis

People above the age of 50 with a family history of arthritis suffer from this type of arthritis. The bones of the hip joint and theircartilaginous cushions get worn out. The lubricating fluid between the bones and cartilage is gone. Broken pieces of cartilage and sometimes bare bone rubbing on each other in the joint cause pain. The pain is mild to moderate in the beginning, but with passage or time and further wear and tear, the pain become moderate to severe.

Rheumatoid arthritis

The synovial membrane gets thickened and inflamed when a patient suffers from this type of arthritis. The inflammation damages the cartilage cushioning and causes pain and stiffness.

Post-traumatic arthritis

If a patient suffers aninjury or an accident, this type of arthritis can follow. The cartilage gets damaged because of the injury, just like other types of arthritis, and this causes pain.

Avascular necrosis

If because of any accident or injury, the hip joint gets dislocated, the blood flow to the femoral head is reduced. As a result, the part in the middle of the head of the femur gradually dies. The condition is commonly known as osteonecrosis wherethe lack of blood flow results in the collapse the bone surface and this results in arthritis.

This type of arthritis can be caused by other diseases or drugs as well.

Childhood hip disease

Many children suffer from a hip problem in their childhood. Though the issue gets resolved during childhood itself, it may cause arthritis in later part of their lives. Also, when the inner joint surfaces are affected and the hip doesn’t grow properly the patients suffer from this type of arthritis.

What to expect after a THR Germanten Hospital?

Ourhip replacement surgeons ensure that the decision to do hip surgeryis made only after a detailed discussion withthe patient and his/her family. There  is no age limitation for the patient who want to opt for THR. Hip replacement surgery patients may be teenagers, young persons, middle aged people or elderly patients.

A well done THR lasts for 30 to 40 years. The affected and the painful part of your hip is replaced with an artificial hip joint, which functions like the hip itself.

Aftercare

At Germanten Hospital, we not only use advanced technology and medication for hip replacement surgery, but we ensure that our patients receive excellent  aftercareas well.

Implants

We ensure that the artificial implant we use are made with quality material to ensure that it  doesn’twear away.

What should you do after THR surgery?

Although our minimally invasive operating method helps the patients to heal easily and quickly, they still need to follow our recommendations as follows:

  • Keepstair climbing or such exercises to a minimum
  • Avoid falls and other injuries soon after THR surgery has been performed
  • Use an elevated toilet seat which prevents bending the hip for a long period of time
