Trauma & Fractures

Orthopedic trauma is an injury of the musculoskeletal system caused by a sudden accident and requires immediate attention. It refers to dislocations and fractures caused by traumatic events. However, not every orthopedic trauma is life-threatening. But, it can be life-altering. So, it is important that you make the right choice of doctors. Orthopedic trauma surgeons specialize in complex surgeries of joints, bones, and soft tissues. Some specialize in treating just one part while others in general care.

The latter cannot treat acute fractures. They receive training in the joint realignment and fractured bone treatment.

Common Orthopedic Traumas

The most common orthopedic traumas are

  • Tibial and femoral shaft fractures,
  • Spinal cord injuries,
  • Pelvic and acetabular fractures,
  • Ankle and foot injuries, and
  • Hand and upper extremity injuries

Simple fractures, open fractures, unstable fractures, and greenstick fractures are among the most commonly noticed fractures.

    Methods

Trauma and fractures are treated using open and closed methods. In closed treatment, the practitioner applies pressure on the bone and the muscles and skin are left intact. In this, there are no incursions and the surgeon doesn’t even see the bone. The open treatment includes surgical dealings with the broken bones in order to fix them in place. Closed methods are implemented only in rare cases as they have a lower success rate.

In most cases, these injuries happen during an accident. But, in some cases, such diseases and injuries can be present since birth. Some acquire them by old age or conditions like cancer. The trauma might only affect the bone or the bone and soft tissue. So, while treating injuries and fractures, it is important to consider the pre-existing diseases and conditions of the patient. It will determine the treatment as well as the final outcome. The common diseases to look out for are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and osteoporosis.

    Treatment

The most common treatments from our Trauma & Fracture department are:

    • Amputation
    • Foot surgery
    • Hand reconstruction
    • Healing sprains
    • Joining broken bones
    • Joint replacements for severe trauma
    • Spine surgeries
    • Treating infected or non-healing fractures
    • Treatment of dislocated joints

For simple fractures, immobilization with plaster casts is enough to heal. For complex and compound fractures, you might need prosthetic devices for holding damaged connective tissue or bones together such as wires, screws, tongs, and pins.

Whether or not the surgery is successful will depend on a lot of factors including the age of the patient, their general health, the current medical problems they have, and their willingness to follow the rehabilitative therapy guidelines after the procedure.

At Germanten Hospital, we have the top orthopedic surgeons in the country who are highly-qualified. They work closely with other surgeons like neurosurgeons, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and vascular surgeons to treat patients who have suffered extensive multiple surgeries.
